Records and Fees

The Wisconsin Open Records Laws (ss. 19.31 to 19.39) govern public requests for government information.  The policy of the law is to entitle the public access to records regarding government affairs.    However, records involving a criminal incident are often sensitive in nature.  Any incident report that involves a PENDING investigation or PENDING court action WILL NOT be released without prior court order or permission from the Lafayette County District Attorney.  The Wisconsin State Accident Report can be released regardless of pending action once it is completed by the investigating deputy.

The following fees will apply to Sheriff's Office Open Records Requests:

CD/DVD ( audio, video or photos) $20.00 each
Accident Reports $5.00 each
Incident Reports

$4.00 + 25 ¢ per page (1-5 pages)

5 pages or more add $3.00 for postage

*Long term storage record searches
may require additional fees

If there are any fees for searching or copying these records, please inform me if the cost will exceed the above specified amount. However, I would also like to request a waiver of all fees in that the disclosure of the requested information is in the public interest and will contribute significantly to the public’s understanding. This information is not being sought for commercial purposes.
