Berry Tavern

The granite monument in front of the Berry Tavern is inscribed: “This stone marks the old Chicago stage road, and the tavern built by Fortunatus Berry in 1829. Erected by the D.A.R. of Shullsburg." It was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 25th, 1914 by the Rhoda Hinsdale Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Formed in 1909 at the initiative of Shullsburg historian, Janette Burlingham, charter members of the Shullsburg D.A.R. included: Dr. Mary P. Gratiot, who was married to Dr. Charles C. Gratiot, grandson of Indian Agent Col. Henry Gratiot; Mary Ann Simpson, widow of Gratiot's Grove attorney and legislator Philemon B. Simpson, who aided victims during the 1854 cholera outbreak at the Berry Tavern; Luella Simpson, wife of Lafayette County judge Jefferson Simpson; and Josephine Law, wife of Shullsburg lawyer, editor and publisher Thomas J. Law.
