About Lafayette County’s Trails

Lafayette County boasts a variety of trails that offer a variety of opportunities to explore its natural beauty. Whether you enjoy biking, horseback riding, walking, or riding your off-road vehicle, Lafayette County has something to offer for everyone!

Cheese Country Trail

One of the most popular trails in Lafayette County is the Cheese Country Trail. This multi-use trail spans over an inactive railroad bed from Mineral Point to Monroe totaling up to 47 miles in length. The trail is extremely popular with ATVs, UTVs and OHMs. The trail is also open to hikers, bicyclists, and those riding horses. The winter season welcomes snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. As you travel the trail, you'll pass through picturesque farmland, pastures dotted with grazing cows, and charming small towns. Be sure to stop and sample some of the region's famous cheese along the way!

Fayette Trail

At around 3.5 miles, this off-road trail traverses from Fayette Cemetery Lane through some hills, twists and turns over to Furnace Hill Road. The trail is maintained by Tri-County ATV Club and remains private property with a trail use agreement. Please respect the landowner’s rights and stay on trail.

Mound View State Trail

Lafayette County’s only exclusive bike trail spanning 7 miles from Belmont to the west into Grant County and ending in Platteville. This trail boasts a blacktop finish and gorgeous views of the surrounding area, especially the Platte Mounds. Pecatonica State Trail

Another gem in Lafayette County is the Pecatonica State Trail, which stretches over 10 miles from Belmont to Calamine. This scenic trail follows the route of another old railroad corridor and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. In addition to ATV/UTV & OHM use, it's perfect for hiking, biking, and even horseback riding in some sections. When winter comes, the trail is designated for snowmobile and cross-country skiing use. At the end of the trail you connect into the Cheese Country Trail.

Road Routes

Lafayette County has opened all county “lettered” highways to ATV/UTV use. Riders should be aware of all other local laws that apply within the townships, cities and villages of the county and should check them before riding.

Snowmobile Routes

Many generous landowners partner with local Snowmobile Clubs to grant voluntary access through land use agreements to provide snowmobile trails spanning all throughout Lafayette County. Currently, there are approximately 177 miles of snowmobile trail during the winter besides trails through Yellowstone Wildlife Area, Cheese Country Trail and Pecatonica State Trail!

Yellowstone Wildlife Area Equestrian Trail

Lafayette County’s exclusive trail system for horseback riding resides in the Yellowstone Wildlife Area. This trail system is approximately 30 miles in length and is maintained by the Wisconsin DNR and more information can be found by clicking here.
