Community Support Program (CSP)

What are Community Support Programs?

Community Support Programs or CSP’s are outpatient treatment programs designed to provide mental health treatment and rehabilitation to members of the community suffering from serious and persistent mental illnesses (Bipolar, Schizophrenia and other Psychotic Disorders). The treatment provided is recovery focused, person centered and community based. Being community based allows the participant in the program to receive services in the community and in their natural environment rather than in a typical office setting. Treatment is individualized based on the person’s needs and goals.

What type of treatment is provided in a CSP?

The type of services a person receives from the program is based upon their assessed need and what they are hoping to gain from their involvement in the program. The following list is an example of the services provided:

* Psychiatry                                                                              * Psychotherapy

* Medication management and monitoring                          * Psychosocial rehabilitation

* Social opportunities                                                             * Assistance with daily activities

* Benefit/case management & connection to resources    * Vocational Rehabilitation

In addition to these services, individuals in the program are involved in a treatment plan meeting every six months to identify their goals and to incorporate those goals into their treatment.

Who works in a CSP? And what would treatment look like?

Community Support Programs are staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals with varying experiences and knowledge. They work together as a team to provide services. What this means is that the participant may have one CSP staff member assigned as their case manager and another as their therapist. It also means that some participants in the program will have regular contact with several different staff for different rehabilitative purposes. Using a team model allows the program participant to receive care that is consistent, uniform and structured to meet their needs. The ultimate goal is that the participants in the program will spend less time in institutional settings, such as hospitals, jails and prisons and will spend more time living life in the community, working towards recovery and meeting their life goals.
